The Mind Talk

As we step into the New Year once again, we arrive at an opportunity to reflect, reset and recreate. While self-reflection could be a daily practice, most people do a little extra during the New Year as it symbolizes fresh beginnings, offering us a chance to assess what’s been working and what we can shift or enhance in the year to come. People have been setting intentions and resolutions for years, however these intentions end up being short-lived, and according to the Statistic Brain Research Institute, 80% of New Year’s resolutions tend to fade away by February. This often happens because much of our self-talk can lack self-awareness and compassion. We tend to approach the notion of change from a place of judgment, which criticises our current position and drives us to improve by giving ourselves a list of instructions filled with “do’s” and “don’ts” in our minds.  The end result often leads to feelings of inadequacy.  In an attempt to compensate for this sense of not being good enough, we may find ourselves reverting to the very coping mechanisms we wished to change.

To create meaningful and lasting change, let’s approach the idea of goal-setting through the lens of the three C’s: compassion, commitment, and clarity. If there’s something you wish to shift, take a moment to assess where you currently are and explore what led you there. For instance, if you find yourself binge eating, it may stem from a deeper void, like loneliness, that deserves your attention. Judging that part of yourself or simply instructing it to change is ineffective. Instead, embrace your current state and envision where you want to be, all from a place of self-acceptance and awareness, with a clear path towards your goal.

Here are some steps on how to create goals with more awareness and establish resolutions that truly stick:

Focus on what is under your control

Setting goals that rely on others is a recipe for disappointment. What truly lies within your control are your interpretations, decisions, choices, attitude, and actions. Focus on setting goals that resonate with your core values and support your greater vision for life. Make sure they are rooted in your own efforts and foster a nurturing attitude towards yourself and your aspirations.

While you may not have complete control over your environment or the outcomes, you can control your efforts and the actions you take. Identify the area of your life that you most want to transform—whether it’s landing a promotion, shifting your weight, adding more joy, writing a book, or practicing mindfulness. Then, map out the concrete actions you will undertake to turn that goal into reality.

Have clarity

Clarity in your goals is essential for measuring your success and recognizing when you’ve truly achieved it. Vague goals yield vague results. Be specific. Instead of saying, “I want to be healthier,” articulate it clearly: “I will lower my cholesterol to 150 mg/dL, I will consume 30 grams of protein with each meal, and I will walk for 30 minutes every morning before work.”

Envision what achieving this goal looks like. What steps will you take? What preparations are necessary? How will you feel after your morning walks? Every visualization creates a vivid picture in your subconscious mind, igniting the neural pathways necessary to turn that vision into reality. Remember, clarity empowers you to move forward with intention and purpose.

Believe It Can Happen

Your beliefs can either propel you toward your goals or hinder your progress. In fact, whenever you struggle to achieve the results you desire, it’s often because your beliefs are in conflict with your aspirations. Many of us carry limiting beliefs—thoughts like “I am not enough,” “I am not capable,” or “I am not as good as my counterparts.” These thoughts can be significant roadblocks to your success.

Set an intention to cultivate beliefs that support your dreams. One of the simplest ways to introduce empowering beliefs into your life is through affirmations. Try saying to yourself, “I’ve got my back, I am supported, I am worthy, I am capable,” and “I trust life.” Repeating these affirmations daily, both in the morning and before bed, can help reset your mindset, shifting your focus toward your goals instead of allowing limiting beliefs to take over.

To dive deeper, I encourage you to engage in a practice of catharsis to address the root of your limiting beliefs. Techniques like journaling, seeking therapy, or practicing regular breathwork can help you confront and overcome these barriers.

Create space

Many resolutions falter simply because we haven’t created the necessary space for them in our lives; they remain as nice ideas rather than actionable plans. If you truly want to achieve a goal, treat it like an important appointment—schedule it in your diary. This intentional planning significantly boosts the likelihood of follow-through by mentally preparing you for the commitment ahead, even if it’s months away.

The likelihood of your success can be measured by how much space you’ve made in your mind, your daily routine, and your overall planning to move toward your goal.  Creating that space allows your aspirations to evolve from mere thoughts into tangible realities

Act Now (despite your feelings)!

Let’s face it, you are not going to feel like going to the gym or writing your book every time you have scheduled to do it.  Acknowledge that discomfort is a natural part of the change process, and acknowledge your feelings without letting them dictate your actions. Instead of waiting for the perfect moment or claiming you will get to it after something else happens, commit to taking action within five seconds of feeling the urge to procrastinate. Even if the initial steps feel daunting, remember that your commitment to change is stronger than your momentary resistance. Embrace the process, and allow yourself to feel the discomfort while moving forward. By doing this, you not only honor your commitment but also build resilience and habit around your new routine.

Let Go of the Outcome

One of the most crucial yet challenging aspects of goal-setting is learning to let go of your attachment to the outcome. The more you cling to a specific result, the more anxiety you may feel about whether it will happen. This anxiety can negatively impact your mindset and ultimately sabotage your efforts. When you recognize that your self-worth and personal value are not tied to your success, you free yourself from the burden of expectations. This liberation allows you to shift your focus from merely reaching a destination to truly embracing the journey. Remember, it’s not just about achieving the goal; it’s about the growth, the learning that comes from stumbling a couple of times, and the valuable experiences you gain along the way.

By applying these six simple guidelines—focusing on what you can control, ensuring clarity in your goals, believing in your ability to achieve them, scheduling your actions, acting promptly, and letting go of attachment—you can set yourself up for success and lasting change in 2025. Embrace a grounded approach that encourages meaningful transformation beyond the initial excitement of the New Year. Remember, it’s not about the timing or how big your action is, the key is to just take that first step. As you embark on your journey of manifestation, visualize your desired outcomes, believe they are possible, and trust the process. Wishing you all the best in your pursuit of a fulfilling year ahead!
